Myofascial Release
Massage therapists employ myofascial release (or deep tissue work) on the restricted fascia. Using knuckles, elbows, or fingers , the therapist slowly stretches the restricted fascia by applying degrees of pressure.
Myofascial release seeks for changes in the client's myofascial structures by stretching, elongation of fascia, or mobilising adhesive tissues. The therapist slowly moves through layers of the fascia until the deep tissues are reached.
The myofascial release technique generally follows this pattern:
- Massaging the surface of the body with the appropriate knuckles, or forearm, and fingers.
- Sink into the soft tissue.
- Contact the first barrier/restricted layer.
- Create a 'line of tension'.
- Engage the fascia by taking up slack in the tissue.
- Move or drag the fascia across the surface while staying in touch with the underlying layers.
