Why Do Asian Bodywork Therapy Practitioners Need Liability Insurance?
Whether your state requires liability insurance or not, all practitioners should be aware of the importance of protecting your career, assets, and reputation if anything were to go wrong. When addressing client complaints with any type of bodywork, accidents can happen—and even the most educated and experienced ABT practitioner isn't fully immune to this, which is why liability insurance coverage is a must.
Why Choose MASSAGE Magazine Insurance Plus?
Not only do we cover more modalities than any other insurance provider on the market (especially when it comes to ABT) but our coverage goes further than just liability insurance. Each policy automatically comes with protection for your equipment, rental space, and identity, plus you receive access to free online continuing education and ACA-compliant individual health insurance plans.

Asian Bodywork Insurance FAQ's
What does MMIP's insurance cover?
Our insurance is designed to actively protect professionals from the many different forms of risks they’ll face every day in the industry and includes:
- General liability - covers policyholders from third party claims relating to an injury and/or property damage. This type of coverage is deliberately broad (hence, “general”) to cover the many different types of accidents that can happen. A new client tripping over your front door mat can be all it takes to suddenly be facing a general liability claim against you.
- Professional liability - covers the policyholder from claims related to malpractice, or the actual services they were performing when the injury and/or property damage occurs.
- Product liability - covers the policyholder from claims relating to a client having an adverse reaction experienced because of a product used during the session.
- Rental Damage liability - This coverage provides added protection to the space that you are practicing in for damage caused by you or one of your customers. Massage Magazine Insurance Plus is one of the few companies that includes this coverage at no extra charge.
- Stolen Equipment
- ID Protection
Where can I get CEUs?
MASSAGE Magazine Insurance Plus is one of the very few insurance programs that comes with unlimited NCBTMB-approved continuing education courses. These courses are designed to be both informative and engaging so you retain more of what’s being taught. Self-paced with insights from industry pros, our CE courses for Asian Bodywork Therapy helps you stay current and can help count towards the continuing education requirements set by your state board.
Can I get insurance coverage without being an LMT?
Some states don’t require a license in order to practice massage but every jurisdiction is different so make sure you’re up to date on your state board’s requirements. With that said, we can’t insure something that isn’t legal for you to do, so if a license is required by your state, you'd need that in order to secure insurance coverage.
Can I file a claim after my policy expires?
With MMIP, yes you can. Some policies fall under a claims made policy but ours use the industry-preferred type which is occurrence form. Claims made policies are clear cut - you have to file a claim while the policy is still active in order to be considered. If you have a session on the last day of your policy, but a claim comes days later, you simply wouldn’t be able to file for this claim.
Occurrence form coverage takes a more realistic approach and says you can still file a claim after the policy expires as long as the claim event happened during the active term. This important distinction can mean the difference between full coverage and no coverage at all so always make sure your policy uses occurrence form.
Can I add additional insureds to my policy?
Absolutely. There are many occasions where an additional insured is needed on a policy so we make it easy to add as many additional insureds as is needed. As an example, being added as an additional insured may be required by landlords that don’t want to be held liable for something arising from the activities of their tenants.
Does this insurance cover slip and fall lawsuits?
Slip and fall accidents are unfortunately an all too common type of claim that can happen to anyone who opens their doors for business. General liability coverage is also called “slip and fall insurance” since this type of injury and ensuing claim event is a common category. If your client gets injured or has their property damaged while seeing you to receive services, they may decide to file suit against you to get restitution. With MMIP’s insurance, you’d have all the way up to $2 million to cover both the costs of the general liability claim and any legal defense fees, if they’re necessary.
Does this insurance have an hour qualification?
While some insurance plans out there do require a certain level of hours of training and/or education, MMIP has no such requirement. We want our insurance policies to be as accessible to professionals as possible, no matter where they find themselves in their careers.
How much does MMIP's insurance cost?
Asian Bodywork Therapy practitioners can get our all-encompassing insurance policy tailored just for energy work for the low annual rate of just $159. If you’re a student, you can take advantage of our discounted student insurance policy. At just $25 for an entire year of coverage, this professional-caliber policy is one of the best values on the market today.
A smart move is to wait until just before graduating to activate your student insurance policy. That way, you’ll get most of your first year on the job covered, great insurance options, and awesome benefits - all for around $2 per month.
Is liability insurance worth it?
This is a question we receive often, especially from first time teachers considering foregoing the cost of insurance and just taking their chances. Our insurance policy was tailored for practitioners who want the security of a solid plan safeguarding their practice in the therapy they love. At just $159 per year, or around $13 per month, each policyholder gets millions of dollars worth of insurance coverage types, additional protection mechanisms built-in, and a whole suite of awesome member benefits that are available to use immediately. Compared to the price of a lawsuit which could include medical bills, rehabilitation costs, lost wages, legal fees, and more, the coverage and peace of mind that comes with securing insurance is an incredible value.
What types of services does MMIP's insurance cover?
We know even within a specialized practice like Asian Bodywork Therapy, there are many different techniques that can be employed to be most beneficial to your client. Yet some policies only cover a limited number of core services and then charge extra or don’t cover anything outside of that. That’s why MMIP created a program that covers not only the many variations, but literally hundreds of additional massage, health, and wellness services, as well. Acupressure, shiatsu, medical qigong, reflexology, and more are all covered under one all-encompassing policy.
I work for a massage spa, why do I need my own insurance?
Massage spas do usually carry some insurance for their employees, but this can be a small amount of coverage and commonly they’ll have shared annual aggregates. This means that the coverage amount can be depleted by other members in the group before you get a chance to use it. To get the peace of mind knowing you’re covered no matter what, and at just $159 per year, having your own insurance policy is the way to go.
Am I covered internationally by my policy?
Your Massage Magazine Insurance Plus policy does not include coverage internationally. Currently, our policy covers you throughout the 50 United States.
Whether I practice in a spa or a client’s home does my policy protect me?
Your massage insurance policy is flexible and travels with you. Whether you are providing massage services to clients in the comfort of their own homes or you are working at a local spa, you are protected.
The massage liability policy from MASSAGE Magazine Insurance Plus provides peace of mind and the ability to grow your massage practice as much as you desire.
Does MASSAGE Magazine Insurance Plus offer an incentive for referrals?
Yes! We greatly welcome referrals. In fact, we offer a free referral bonus if you send another massage therapist to us for liability insurance. Read more information on how to qualify for your free referral bonus.
