Massage CEUs Frequently Asked Questions
Are CEU classes for massage therapy available online?
Absolutely, our CE Library is solely accessible online. The informative and engaging classes are self-paced, meaning you can start and stop as needed and always return right back to where you left off. Through a partnership with Panda Massage CEU, massage CEUs online are available for our members to meet nearly all states recertification requirements.
It is important to check for yourself and ensure these courses meet your state's regulations. Because members enjoy unlimited access, however and whenever you want to engage with the material is up to you. Access to our CE Library and Panda’s online curriculum is included as a free benefit to our members’ massage therapist liability insurance policies.
What’s the difference between a CEU and a CE hour?
CEU is a continuing education unit and is a requirement among many different occupations where a professional license is required to conduct services. Many states will have a required amount of hours of continuing education for renewal. CEUs don’t always have a one-to-one relationship with the amount of hours a required activity takes.
For example, some states have a requirement of ten contact hours for continuing education but these ten hours only equate to one CEU. Always be sure to check and understand your state board’s requirements for massage therapists.
Where can I find massage continuing education workshops near me?
Many states do require a live portion for demonstrations or classes as part of their CE renewal requirements. The state board where your practice is located should be able to provide a list of approved providers in your area. As a good rule of thumb, always look for NCBTMB-approved courses. The NCBTMB is one of the largest national certification boards for massage therapy and most reputable education providers will be certified through them.
How much do MMIP’s massage CEU classes cost?
Access to both our exclusive, members-only CE Library and also Panda Massage CEU classes are included at no extra cost with your MMIP membership! As an added bonus, you can take additional classes - so brush up on an area that you’d like to know more about or knock out a block of your required CEUs all in one sitting. The classes are self-paced so you can go as quickly or slowly as you need to to retain the information. Talk to an insurance sales agent about free CEU classes today.
What are the CE requirements to renew an NCBTMB board certification?
Board certification means you’ve taken additional steps to further your massage therapy knowledge and accreditation. Once you become Board-certified you’ll need to renew your license biennially with at least 24 CEUs completed within that two-year time period. Because our CE Library courses are NCBTMB-approved, you can be confident the hours will count towards your Board certification’s CE requirements.
Where can I get free continuing education units for massage therapy?
As a member of MMIP, CEUs earned from our online learning library are included at no extra charge. Most state boards for massage therapy require around 24 hours of continuing education for license renewals. Paying for these classes yourself will run upwards of $170 on the open market. Comparatively, for just $169/year, our massage therapy liability insurance members receive comprehensive professional and general liability coverage, product liability coverage, and even identity theft protection.
All of this comes in addition to loads of exclusive benefits, which among a host of other goodies, includes free continuing education units for massage therapy. Talk to a team member about free CEUs today.
What kind of courses are available in MMIP’s CE Library?
Through our partnership with Panda Massage CEU, we’re able to provide our members free, unlimited access to a full curriculum of courses that are NCBTMB-approved and help satisfy your state board’s massage therapy CE requirements. Courses cover the gamut including pertinent topics like medical errors, HIV/Aids, and kinesiology.
For renewal CEUs, the “Ethics in Massage Therapy” course provides a free ethics CEU for massage therapists. For those wanting a broad overview of the profession, the “Past Present and Future” course affords the chance to learn more about the origin of the many different modalities for massage therapy and will count towards most states’ general CEU requirements.
Do I have to have massage insurance through MMIP to take the online CEU classes?
Although the free access to our member-exclusive library of CEU classes is only available for our massage insurance policyholders, we also offer access to our massage continuing education courses without the insurance for only $49 per year. Do the CEU requirements for massage therapists vary based on where I live?
The exact massage continuing education requirements will vary from state to state. Because of this, each state board will have specific requirements for the continuing education of massage therapists. However, Massage Magazine Insurance Plus has compiled the requirements for each state in one place. With our State Requirements Tool, you can quickly find the massage continuing education requirements for your state and see which courses you will need.
Here at Massage Magazine Insurance Plus, we understand that keeping up with your annual massage CEU requirements can be a challenge. That is why we make it simple for you to stay on top of the requirements for each state by having them in a single place. We remove the stress of having to hunt down each state requirement and have it compiled in an easy-to-access guide for your convenience.
Do I have to have an in-person class to meet my CEU requirements?
Some states will require that a portion of your continuing education as a massage therapist takes place in person. This means that you are not able to fulfill the state board requirements entirely online and will need to find an educational center that offers in-person classes. We recommend searching for a center near you that is approved by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork (NCBTMB).
Finding an in-person class that is NCBTMB-approved will ensure that you are receiving a tested and certified education provider and it is coming from a trustworthy source. They are also an excellent resource for additional learning materials and specific annual requirements for massage therapists. Whether you have been a massage therapist for a while, or are just starting your career in massage therapy, you want to be certain that all of your education and practices are board-certified.
What does it cost to take the CEU courses for massage therapists without the massage insurance portion?
While the access is a free perk of being a member of Massage Magazine Insurance Plus, you can gain access to the library of massage CEU courses for just $49 a year with a benefits-only plan. Although you are not getting the added benefit of peace of mind with the insurance for massage therapists, it is a flexible option if you have insurance through another provider.
How many CEUs do massage therapists need?
Every state has its own requirements for massage therapist CEUs so always check with your state board for the specific requirements for your renewal. Florida’s Board of Massage Therapy requires applicants on their first biennial renewal to have completed two hours of CE in the Prevention of Medical Errors and then one hour of general topics for every month that has elapsed since the initial issuance of the license. For example, if you were licensed ten months ago, you’ll need to show a total of ten total hours of CE completed, which includes the two hours for the required Prevention of Medical Errors course.
After the first biennial renewal, applicants in Florida will then need 12 live CE hours, six general hours (one hour of which is a required class in spotting/preventing human trafficking), two hours in the Prevention of Medical Errors course, two hours for a course covering laws and rules in the industry, and two hours for professional ethics. Different state boards may also allow additional methods for obtaining a given amount of required CEUs including attending specific board meetings and/or performing pro-bono services.
Does MMIP CE provide massage CEU workshops?
Our CE classes help cover the majority of the general requirements for renewal but would not generally count as a “live” demonstration or class. Some states have a requirement for both general classes, a live portion, and then may also include several other categories pertinent to those in the health and wellness fields such as preventing the spread of pathogens, medical laws and regulations, or professional ethics.
Are MMIP’s massage therapy CEU classes approved by the NCBTMB?
Yes, through our partnership with Panda Massage CEU, a leading provider in massage therapist CEU classes, we are able to bring our members a full curriculum of National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB)-approved classes. Whether you specialize in cupping, kinesiology, or deep tissue massage, it is vital to know of and practice health sanitation and safety standards when working.
Do the online CEU courses count for my state board requirement?
Although this will vary by state, the massage therapy continuing education courses our members have access to are NCBTMB-approved and should count towards at least a portion of your annual CEU requirements.
