Why does our massage liability insurance outweigh other insurance options?
Massage Magazine Insurance Plus offers honest, dependable, and affordable professional liability insurance for massage therapists and bodyworkers for $169 per year for full-time pros and $149 for part-time professionals. Part-time professionals includes those who work hands-on with their clients fewer than 10 hours per week.
We were fed up with insurance companies offering complicated policies that didn’t have their members in mind, so we decided to create a one that did. That's why our policy automatically covers over 450+ techniques and modalities, follows professionals across all 50 states, includes over $1,800 in member benefit savings and access to over 55 hours of free online continuing education courses.

Let's Compare Massage Liability Insurance Options
Lowest Price
When shopping for trusted massage therapist liability insurance, price can be a major deciding factor. But, does more expensive really mean more benefits and coverage? Conversely, is the cheapest massage insurance plan going to provide adequate coverage? Let’s take a closer look. With ABMP and AMTA, there are membership fees that are required to be paid first before you’ll be able to apply for massage therapy liability insurance. That means each year, you’ll have to pay another fee to renew your membership and then pay for renewing the insurance plan. With Massage Magazine Insurance Plus, no membership fees are required to become insured, and you receive all of the benefits and comprehensive coverage limits without any extra or hidden fees.
For professional rates, BBI has the lowest rate at $96 per year but does not use the industry preferred Occurrence form policy type which, depending on timing, can actually leave you without any coverage for a claim that happens during your policy. Check out our occurrence form page to learn more.
Insurance Based On Price
MMIP | $169 |
ABMP | $199/$229 |
AMTA | $235 |
Beauty and Bodywork | $96 |
Hands on Trade | $154 |

Coverage limits by company
ABMP | $2 Million (Per Occurrence)/$6 Million (Individual Annual Aggregate) |
MMIP | $2 Million (Per Occurrence)/$3 Million (Individual Annual Aggregate) |
AMTA | $2 Million/$6 Million ($10 Million Shared Annual Aggregate) |
Beauty and Bodywork | $2 Million (Per Occurrence)/$3 Million (Individual Annual Aggregate) |
Hands on Trade | $2 Million (Per Occurrence) |
*For customers in the state of Indiana professional liability limits are increased to $2 million per occurrence and $6 million individual annual aggregate for massage therapy services only; General liability limits are increased to $2 million per occurrence and $8 million individual annual aggregate for massage therapy services only.
Professional (Malpractice) & General (Trip & Fall) Liability Insurance limits are not all created equal. First off, everyone in our comparison except Insure Bodywork uses the industry-preferred Occurrence Form policy coverage. ABMP and MMIP/BBI both deliver high coverage limits at $2 Million/$6 Million and $2 Million/$3 Million, respectively. Hands-on Trade massage therapist insurance coverage only provides a $2 million per occurrence limit so without an aggregate that would be all that’s available.
While AMTA delivers high coverage limits at $2 Million/$6 Million, they have a Shared Annual Aggregate limit of $10 Million. This means everyone insured under AMTA is capped at the $10 Million mark. If there are several large claims or many small claims in the same year and the Shared Annual Aggregate is used up, you may not be covered in the event of a claim.
Have Your Coverage Limits Reserved For You
Free Continuing Education
MMIP and ABMP include free continuing education as a benefit to their members in addition to liability insurance. Both are NCBTMB-approved. AMTA doesn’t provide it directly but gives a discount up to 40% on continuing education for its members. Beauty and Bodywork Insurance and Hands-on Trade did not have any continuing education benefits listed. Many state boards require continuing education for licensure, so not having to pay extra for continuing education is a great benefit to capitalize on.

ABMP | Free Continuing Education - NCBTMB-approved |
MMIP | Free Continuing Education - NCBTMB-approved |
AMTA | Discount on Continuing Education |

Rental Damage coverage limits
MMIP | $150,000 |

AMTA | $100,000 (Fire/Water Legal Liability) |
Beauty and Bodywork | $300,000 (occupied for 7 days or less) |
Hands on Trade | No coverage offered |
Rental Damage Coverage
This is probably the most interesting review of our comparison. Beauty and Bodywork Insurance has the highest rental damage coverage limit at $300,000 and covers all types of losses whereas some of the others are limited to only a few occurrences. The big differentiator listed on BBI's website is that this coverage only applies for a very short term rental - those that have been “occupied by the insured for 7 days or less”. So if you have an accident on day 8 or beyond, it sounds like you’d be out of luck.
Everyone else except for Hands-On Trade provides rental damage coverage as part of their massage insurance policy; however, ABMP and AMTA only cover damage when it is related to damages caused by fire or water. MMIP covers a larger variety of damages caused to rental properties by the policyholder or a client being treated on the property without putting restrictions on the rental’s occupation length.

Stolen Equipment Coverage
While we never want to think anything could happen to our belongings when we are not looking, sometimes possessions can be stolen. A robbery-by-force is enough to leave even the most seasoned massage professionals shaken and suddenly without the use of the tools they need to do their job. That’s why today’s massage insurance plans are stepping up with this important coverage. MMIP’s massage insurance is the only plan that provides $2,000 in stolen equipment coverage with a low $250 deductible as an added benefit to the liability insurance policy. With ABMP and AMTA you can pay an extra premium of around $100 to cover you for stolen equipment. BBI and Hands On Trade did not list any stolen equipment coverage.

Our Liability Insurance Limits
1 Additional Insured: $10 | Unlimited Additional Insureds: $30
Some massage insurance policies will offer different limits based on your full-time or part-time status. This would mean that if you are a part-time massage therapist, you may have less coverage than a full-time one.
At Massage Magazine Insurance Plus, we don’t believe in offering different coverage limits so all our policies have the same limits. Full-time, part-time, or a student, all members enjoy the same great coverage. Our massage insurance program prices are based on how you will use the coverage and decide to pay.
Professional Liability Insurance: Also known as "malpractice insurance" or "errors and omissions insurance," covers claims related to professional negligence, including instances like burns from hot stones or injuries during a deep tissue massage.
General Liability Insurance: Provides protection from claims that may not directly stem from your professional services. For example, if a client simply tripped and fell on your property, this coverage would protect you from the financial fallout of the lawsuit.
Provides protection against claims related to injuries or damages caused by a product used in your treatment, such as if a client had an allergic reaction from the oil, lotion or other similar product.
This coverage can help protect you if you’re accused of libel, slander, or false advertising.
A type of insurance that provides protection for those who rent or lease a workspace. This type of coverage offers protection against any damage that occurs to the rented or leased premises as a result of the therapist's business activities or actions of their clients.
Provides protection against identity theft and threat incidents that would put personal information at risk. Typically includes credit monitoring, dark web scans, and recovery services if your information is jeopardized.
This provides protection for vital equipment that is stolen or damaged due to theft. If your massage table is stolen, or was damaged while someone attempted theft, stolen equipment coverage will provide coverage for the cost of the replacing or repairing the item.

What is Massage Therapy Liability Insurance?
You can think of massage liability insurance as a safety net for your money and career. Though you may never face a lawsuit over your career, it could be life-changing if you do. While you certainly could go without a safety net, this could put you in a financially vulnerable situation if something goes wrong. Without coverage, you could be solely responsible for paying the costs of a claim against you.
Insurance for massage therapists protects you from the liability, or risk, of having to cover claim expenses yourself. With MMIP, our insurance covers the three biggest forms of liability (professional, general, and product), and also a slew of other professional risks. With rental damage, identity theft, and stolen/damaged equipment protection all included, our members can rest assured they are covered from all sides.
Massage Therapy Insurance Glossary of Terms
Liabilities are the reason you need insurance. These things could go wrong and cause harm to another person. As a massage therapist, a liability typically involves a risk to your clients in some way. You can think of a liability as something for which you could be sued. There are different types of liabilities that require specific coverage. (We’ll cover more on that later).
A professional liability is a risk that comes from your specific occupation. This type of liability is commonly known as “malpractice” or “errors and omissions” liability. As a professional massage therapist, you have a duty of care to your clients. When you make a mistake or forget to do something that results in your client’s harm, that is a professional liability. A professional liability implies that there is an active party at fault, either through commission or omission.
General liability is not specifically related to your profession and can happen in any industry. These are risks that may cause harm or physical distress through lack of care, poor environments, or non-specific hazards to your clients. General liability is often called “slip and fall” liability, as these are common incidents. General liability doesn’t just pertain to physical injury but could also include personal property damage or loss.
Product liabilities are the risks that come with the use of equipment and products (like oils, aromatherapy agents, cleaning products, etc.). Common product liability incidents are allergic reactions to an agent or an injury caused by faulty equipment. These incidents can happen suddenly and without any warning. Sometimes, clients will not know they are intolerant of a product until it creates an adverse reaction.
An aggregate is the coverage amount that a massage liability insurance policy offers. This figure is the maximum amount that an insurance policy will cover for its policyholders. Typically, the aggregate is in yearly increments, so the policyholder can know how much coverage they will have annually.
This is the coverage limit for each incident. Should you have multiple incidents in a year, each occurrence will have a set limit for how much the insurance company will cover.
This one is a little tricky. Occurrence form coverage means that your policy provides liability coverage for incidents that occur during the policy term. Even if a client files a claim after the policy is no longer active, you would still be eligible for coverage if the incident occurred within the policy term. Occurrence form coverage is the opposite of claims-made insurance, which only covers you if the incident occurs AND the claim is filed during the insurance policy term.
Why Do I Need Massage Insurance?
To be able to truly compare massage insurance plans, you need to know what it is you’re comparing, right? So let’s look at what exactly massage insurance is, which leads right into why you need it if you are practicing today.
Massage insurance is a tool for you and your massage therapy business. Just like all the other equipment you rely on, massage insurance provides a host of benefits for today’s professionals. First and foremost, massage insurance protects you from liabilities. Liability is a legal term which simply means something you alone are responsible for paying. If there’s ever an accident, the party that was injured or had their property damaged is probably going to want you to pay them back for their loss. With insurance you’ll hear the term “covered loss”, which are events that are covered under the terms of the insurance policy.
Insurance, therefore, is your career’s safety net. Acting as a tough barrier against liabilities so that you aren’t forced to pay out-of-pocket when the unexpected happens. Now, today’s massage insurance providers are upping the ante with a host of additional protections and benefits that really add value to the average plan. Our massage comparison puts all of these plans side-by-side to give you a perfect birds eye view of what these plans offer so you can find the perfect plan to provide the best level of protection for your individual needs.
Benefits of Having Massage Liability Insurance
With any purchase, as consumers we’re expecting to derive some form of benefit. Massage insurance is no different but how the benefits of a plan play out can differ greatly between different plans. To help narrow down the benefits of massage therapy insurance, we’ve broken down the benefits you should expect to receive from day one into three categories:
Liability Protection: as we’ve seen, the most important aspect of any massage liability insurance plan is protection from liability. Accidents come in all shapes and sizes and often there is simply nothing you could have done differently to avoid an incident. A client walking in that hits an area rug at just the right angle and trips and falls can, and has, lead to multi-million dollar lawsuits against massage providers. General, professional, and product liability protection are must-have starting points for any massage insurance plan worth its weight.
Additional Risk Mitigation: benefiting from having a stout insurance policy in place goes beyond the big liabilities we mentioned above because today’s environment simply carries more risk. That’s why MMIP includes total protection measures like stolen equipment coverage, rental damage coverage, and even an identity protection plan. Insurance should provide maximum protection in order to provide a true benefit to you and your practice.
Member Benefits: easily everyone’s favorite benefit is actually benefits i.e. the member benefits that come with the plan. Member benefits really serve to maximize the value you receive for the investment you make in massage insurance. Not every plan includes a whole lot of benefits and some are downright hard to figure out before purchasing the plan. Look for massage insurance programs that highlight the benefits you’ll receive up front so you can anticipate how much you’ll actually utilize them. With MMIP, our members get a plan that’s worth more than $1,800 by itself and includes sweet bonuses like a free professional website and continuing education.
Choosing the best insurance plan is going to take weighing all the coverages, benefits, and pricing in order to see the best combination therein. That’s why we’ve dedicated this entire page to running through all the top programs so you have everything you need in one, easy place.
