Why Do Massage Therapists Need Liability Insurance?
All professional massage therapists should have their own liability insurance coverage, whether your state requires it or not. Even the most experienced massage therapists can face the unexpected, like a client having an allergic reaction to a product used during a session or your massage table breaking causing them to fall and sustain injuries.
Having the proper coverage in place could make the difference between facing bankruptcy or being completely protected in the case of a lawsuit. If a lawsuit is brought against you, your massage liability insurance from Massage Magazine Insurance Plus will pay for the costs associated with it.
General Liability vs. Professional Liability
A policy with Massage Magazine Insurance Plus includes both professional liability insurance and general liability insurance—but what does that mean and what is the difference?
General Liability Insurance
General liability insurance is a type of coverage that protects you from accidents that occurred on your premises that were outside of your control such as a client tripping over something in your treatment room and hurting themselves.
Our plan provides you with up to $2 million per occurrence and up to $3 million per year.
Professional Liability Insurance (E&O)
Professional liability insurance is a type of coverage that protects you against malpractice claims that relate directly from your services, such as if a client is burned from your hot stones.
If a client sues you under a professional liability or malpractice claim, MMIP will cover up to $2 million per claim with an annual aggregate of $3 million.

Our Liability Insurance Limits
1 Additional Insured: $10 | Unlimited Additional Insureds: $30
Some massage insurance policies will offer different coverage limits based on your career status. This would mean that if you are a part-time massage therapist or in school to become one, you may have less coverage than a full-time one.
We don’t believe in offering different coverage limits which is why all of our policies have the same limits. Full-time, part-time, or student, all massage therapy insurance members enjoy the same great coverage.
Our massage insurance program prices are based on where you are in your career.
Professional Liability Insurance: Also known as "malpractice insurance" or "errors and omissions insurance," covers claims related to professional negligence, including instances like burns from hot stones or injuries during a deep tissue massage.
General Liability Insurance: Provides protection from claims that may not directly stem from your professional services. For example, if a client simply tripped and fell on your property, this coverage would protect you from the financial fallout of the lawsuit.
This coverage can help protect you if you’re accused of libel, slander, or false advertising.
Provides protection against identity theft and threat incidents that would put personal information at risk. Typically includes credit monitoring, dark web scans, and recovery services if your information is jeopardized.

FAQs
Professional liability insurance is instrumental in protecting massage therapists from any lawsuits filed by a client based on negligence, error, or physical injury. Sometimes referred to as malpractice insurance, it protects the insured from bearing the full costs of a lawsuit or claim made by another party. In a few states, licensed practitioners are required by law to get professional liability insurance.
Massage Magazine Insurance Plus offers general liability insurance, professional liability insurance, and product liability insurance.
The difference lies in the covered incident's timing and the claim's timing. Occurrence Form policies provide coverage if the policy was active when the incident occurred, while Claims-Made policies provide coverage if your policy is active when a claim is made. This means that with Occurrence Form coverage, you are still protected from accidents that occurred during your policy period, even if the claim is made years later. With a Claims-Made policy, however, your ability to file claims expires when your coverage expires.
All three major insurance providers—AMTA, ABMP, and Massage Magazine Insurance Plus—offer Occurrence Form coverage as a part of their massage therapy liability insurance. Each provider offers professional liability insurance and general liability coverage of up to $2 million per occurrence with annual aggregates.
Massage Magazine Insurance Plus offers honest, dependable, and affordable professional massage liability insurance for $169 per year for full-time pros and $159 for part-time professionals. Part-time massage professionals include those who work hands-on with their clients for fewer than 10 hours per week.
Your coverage with MMIP goes into effect immediately upon completing the application. You will receive your certificate of insurance via email within minutes. There is no need to request a quote; coverage starts immediately!
Your MassageMagazine Insurance Plus policy covers all 50 United States, excluding US territories like Puerto Rico and countries outside the United States like Canada.
*For customers in the state of Indiana, professional liability limits are increased to $2 million per occurrence and $6 million individual annual aggregate for massage therapy services only; General liability limits are increased to $2 million per occurrence and $8 million individual annual aggregate for massage therapy services only.

After six months, interest may apply.

The difference is based on the number of hours you work with clients each week. If you work 10 or fewer hours, a part-time policy is right for you. If you work more than 10 hours weekly, you'll need a full-time policy. Business tasks like marketing and admin work don't count toward these hours, and both policies offer the same coverage limits.
