Idaho Massage Liability Insurance Guidelines
Carrying insurance as a Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT) in Idaho demonstrates the individual's and profession's commitment to maintaining high standards of care akin to other healthcare fields.
Idaho massage therapy license holders require rigorous educational and ethical requirements to ensure client safety and well-being. However, unforeseen circumstances or client claims can arise, potentially threatening one's practice and financial security.
Like healthcare practitioners like physicians and nurses who rely on malpractice insurance, massage therapists benefit from massage liability insurance to aid in their profession. This massage insurance coverage offers protection against potential liability claims, defense costs, and peace of mind, allowing therapists to focus on providing quality care while protecting their livelihood in the ever-evolving healthcare landscape.
Massage therapists in Idaho carry the proud name of an LMT, signifying their dedication to upholding ethical and therapeutic standards in healthcare. This distinction places them on par with other healthcare professionals, such as physicians, nurses, and physical therapists, in terms of their commitment to the well-being of their clients.
To be as safe as you in regards to your massage therapy insurance coverage, there are a number of factors to consider.
Guidelines to be Eligible for a Massage Therapy License in Idaho
You must pass an examination to become a licensed massage therapist in Idaho. There are two organizations to consider: the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards and the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork .
Idaho accepts various examinations, including the Massage and Bodywork Licensing Examination (MBLEx), National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage (NCETM), and National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCETMB), among others.
The MBLEx, provided by the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards, is the primary exam for licensure. It assesses essential professional skills and is available in English and Spanish. You can apply online or by mail, pay a $195 fee, and no transcripts are required, though passing the exam alone doesn't guarantee licensure. Candidates typically receive Authorization to Test (ATT) within five business days, allowing them to schedule exams through Pearson VUE.
The National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB) offers the NCTBTMB Board Certification Examination, which doesn't replace state licensure but signifies additional training. To achieve Board Certification, you need at least 750 hours of education and 250 hours of professional work experience.
The Idaho Board accepts results from past certification exams, even predating Idaho's massage therapist licensure. Be sure to contact NCBTMB for more information about their examination process.

Renewal Steps
Your massage therapy license in Idaho expires on your birthdate, and you must renew it annually before that date. If you fail to renew, your license will be canceled according to Idaho law.
Here are your options:
- Renewal: To keep your license, you must submit a renewal application before it expires. This application includes the renewal fee and a declaration that you've completed the required continuing education. Falsely claiming completion of continuing education can lead to disciplinary actions, even revocation.
- Reinstatement: If your license has been canceled due to non-renewal, you can reinstate it within five years of cancellation. To do this, you must provide evidence of completing the required continuing education, a complete renewal application, and the appropriate fees. You must show evidence of continuing education hours required at the time of cancellation, and for each year your license was canceled. Additionally, you'll need to pay a reinstatement fee.
If it's been over five years since your license was canceled, you'll be treated as a new applicant and must follow the standard application process.
