MotherMassage, developed by Elaine Stillerman, addresses massage for women in all stages of pregnancy. The technique incorporates the physiology of pregnancy, labor, and postpartum recovery as well as the skills and appropriate bodywork techniques necessary to massage clients competently from their first trimester through labor and postpartum recovery. Special attention is paid to high risk pregnancies and treating the most common discomforts of pregnancy, such as lower back pain, sciatica and carpal tunnel syndrome. Therapists learn the contraindications and precautions of prenatal massage before becoming certified in MotherMassage.
