What is the practice of Reiki?
Reiki has been used as traditional medicine in Japan for thousands of years. It involves the elemental practice of channeling energy, or life force, known as “Ki.” A Reiki practitioner is one who has mastered the art of tapping into the universal life force to be able to administer it to the patient. Evidence suggests a myriad of health benefits encompassing emotional, physical, and spiritual health and well-being. But Reiki should not be considered a religion. Although “Rei” means from, or of God, Reiki practitioners come from a multitude of different backgrounds and religions. Reiki simply means plugging into the life forces that flow through us all and passing on this beneficial energy to someone in need. Patients report feelings of absolute peace and tranquility after sessions, allowing for the body to focus on healing itself after stressful events. This can be emotional distress such as depression or anxiety or physical distress such as post-surgery recovery. Reiki does not stand at odds with traditional medicines and treatments and should never be used instead of a doctor-prescribed regimen; instead, Reiki complements these treatments allowing for faster recovery times, decreased severity of side effects, and increased positive outlook.
Disciplines and Modalities We Cover
Accidents Can Happen
Regardless of your training or experience, accidents can happen. Whether a client has a bad reaction to a product you use, injures themselves in the lobby, or some other unforeseen event happens, you want to know that your professional and personal lives are protected. That is why Massage Magazine Insurance Plus exists, to give reiki therapists peace of mind.
Without insurance, a legal claim can cost a reiki practitioner their good reputation, thousands of dollars, and may ultimately put a bodywork professional out of business.

Ways You Can Avoid Claims
These are some basic steps you can take as a Reiki provider to reduce the chance a claim is filed against you:
Please note: This is in no way an exhaustive list and practitioners should consult with an MMIP professional to ensure they have adequate coverage in place in the event of a claim. While performing simple steps like these helps reduce the risk of a claim, they can’t eliminate them altogether. For whichever energy modality you practice, having a form of energy work insurance is vital to protecting your practice when the unthinkable happens. Even masters of Reiki, exercising the utmost care and attention to patients, can find themselves facing a potential claim at some point in their careers. Our affordable plans give you peace of mind while you help patients find their own peace through Reiki treatments. We’ll help walk you through the whole process—contact us now.
Reiki Insurance Frequently Asked Questions
Reiki insurance is designed to actively protect professionals from the many different forms of risks they’ll face every day in the industry. The three main types of coverage comprising our reiki insurance plan are general liability, professional liability, and product liability coverage.
General liability - covers policyholders from third party claims relating to an injury and/or property damage. This type of coverage is deliberately broad (hence, “general”) to cover the many different types of accidents that can happen. A new client tripping over your front door mat can be all it takes to suddenly be facing a general liability claim against you.
Professional liability - covers the policyholder from claims related to malpractice, or the actual services they were performing when the injury and/or property damage occurs.
Product liability - covers the policyholder from claims relating to a client having an adverse reaction experienced because of a product used during the session.
Additional areas of coverage that beefs up the level of protection include rental damage coverage, and stolen equipment coverage.
Massage Magazine Insurance Plus is one of the very few reiki insurance programs that comes with unlimited NCBTMB-approved continuing education courses. These courses are designed to be both informative and engaging so you retain more of what’s being taught. Self-paced with insights from industry pros, our CE courses for reiki massage help you stay current and can help count towards the continuing education requirements set by your state board.
Some states don’t require a license in order to practice reiki massage but every jurisdiction is different so make sure you’re up to date on your state board’s requirements. With that said, we can’t insure something that isn’t legal for you to do, so if a license is required by your state, you'd need that in order to secure reiki insurance coverage.
With MMIP, yes you can. Some policies fall under a claims made policy but ours use the industry-preferred type which is occurrence form. Claims made policies are clear cut - you have to file a claim while the policy is still active in order to be considered. If you have a session on the last day of your policy, but a claim comes days later, you simply wouldn’t be able to file for this claim.
Occurrence form coverage takes a more realistic approach and says you can still file a claim after the policy expires as long as the claim event happened during the active term. This important distinction can mean the difference between full coverage and no coverage at all so always make sure your policy uses occurrence form.
Absolutely. There are many occasions where an additional insured is needed on a policy so we make it easy to add as many additional insureds as is needed. As an example, being added as an additional insured may be required by landlords that don’t want to be held liable for something arising from the activities of their tenants.
Slip and fall accidents are unfortunately an all too common type of claim that can happen to anyone who opens their doors for business. General liability coverage is also called “slip and fall insurance” since this type of injury and ensuing claim event is a common category. If your client gets injured or has their property damaged while seeing you to receive services , they may decide to file suit against you to get restitution. With MMIP’s energy work insurance, you’d have all the way up to $2 million to cover both the costs of the general liability claim and any legal defense fees, if they’re necessary.
While some reiki insurance plans out there do require a certain level of hours of training and/or education, MMIP has no such requirement. We want our reiki insurance policies to be as accessible to professionals as possible, no matter where they find themselves in their careers.
Reiki practitioners can get our all-encompassing insurance policy tailored just for energy work for the low annual rate of just $169. If you’re a student, you can take advantage of our discounted reiki student insurance policy. At just $25 for an entire year of coverage, this professional-caliber policy is one of the best values on the market today.
A smart move is to wait until just before graduating to activate your student insurance policy. That way, you’ll get most of your first year on the job covered, great insurance options, and awesome benefits - all for around $2 per month.
True, reiki is the practice of channeling energy in a way that benefits clients in mind, body, and spirit. With a minimal amount of physical touching involved, you may wonder why insurance is even necessary. Unfortunately, liabilities are everywhere for wellness professionals and even practiced reiki practitioners can face a claim event at some point in their careers. Accidents happen in many different forms and often are simply odd, chance occurrences.
When a client slips on a loose rug and falls in just the right way, the resulting injuries can be devastating. Paying out of pocket for their medical bills, lost wages, rehabilitation costs, and even legal fees can wreck your personal finances and even jeopardize a career. That’s why having the safety and security of a solid insurance plan just makes sense for obtaining longevity in the field.
This is a question we receive often, especially from first time teachers considering foregoing the cost of reiki insurance and just taking their chances. Our reiki insurance policy was tailored for reiki practitioners who want the security of a solid plan safeguarding their practice in the therapy they love. At just $169 per year, or around $13 per month, each policyholder gets millions of dollars worth of insurance coverage types, additional protection mechanisms built-in, and a whole suite of awesome member benefits that are available to use immediately. Compared to the price of a lawsuit which could include medical bills, rehabilitation costs, lost wages, legal fees, and more, the coverage and peace of mind that comes with securing reiki insurance is an incredible value.
We know even within a specialized practice like reiki, there are many different techniques that can be employed to be most beneficial to your client. Yet some policies only cover a limited number of core services and then charge extra or don’t cover anything outside of that. That’s why MMIP created a program that covers not only the many variations of reiki, but literally hundreds of additional massage, health, and wellness services, as well. Acupressure, shiatsu, medical qigong, reflexology, and more are all covered under one all-encompassing policy.
Absolutely! In addition to a number of extra protections above and beyond liability coverage like identity protection, rental damage coverage, and more, members enjoy access to a full suite of benefits worth hundreds of dollars all by itself. Take advantage of 50 hours of NCBTMB-approved continuing education courses, get a free, custom website up and running, and enjoy exclusive discounts from the top names in massage products and business services.
Massage spas do usually carry some insurance for their employees, but this can be a small amount of coverage and commonly they’ll have shared annual aggregates. This means that the coverage amount can be depleted by other members in the group before you get a chance to use it. To get the peace of mind knowing you’re covered no matter what, and at just $159 per year, having your own reiki insurance policy is the way to go.
