Maine Massage Liability Insurance Guidelines
Although you are not required to have a massage insurance policy for liability coverage as an LMT in Maine, like any other professional position, it is something that you should look into. With the right insurer, you can find $1,000,000 in liability coverage, for a low monthly rate. Additionally, you can find policies that cover injuries from slip and fall accidents, protect the rental property of offices, and protect your equipment, depending on the type of and extent of the massage therapy insurance policy you choose to buy.
You have two options to getting your license. The first way to receive your license is to complete the application by submitting a background check & high school diploma/GED, and having 500 hours of clinical experience under your belt. This route does not require the passage of a licensing exam.
The second route, which is similar to what most other states require, is completed by passing the licensing exam. Prior to the exam, an applicant must complete 500 class hours from an accredited school. Following the completion of these hours, you will then sit in for the NCETMB/MBLEx exam. In addition to this, you must submit a 3 X 5 photo of yourself, a certification of CPR course completion, and a check for a background check, as well as application fees. It is important to note that this option is primarily for those who do not have clinical experience.
If you do choose to purchase massage practitioner coverage, you should consider the top insurers, and the types of policies they offer. Not only is this the only way to guard yourself from liability, it is also a requirement made by many employers of top massage therapy offices. In other words, although the state of Maine does not require it, many top employers do require their licensed therapists to have at least $1,000,000 in liability coverage, as this coverage removes liability from the employer.
It is not only a good idea to protect yourself and your license; it is the smart thing to do with this type of profession. Insurance is your only shield to a lawsuit, and it is the only way that you can protect your practice and name.
