Is Massage Insurance Required In Massachusetts?
Massachusetts requires licensed massage therapists to maintain individual professional liability insurance with coverage of at least $1 million per occurrence and $1 million aggregate.
MMIP provides $2 million per occurrence and $3 million aggregate professional and general liability coverage, subject to eligibility and policy terms. This exceeds the individual liability limits stated in Massachusetts’ current massage therapist licensing regulations.
Massage therapists should review the Massachusetts Board of Registration of Massage Therapy’s current licensing requirements and their policy documents when confirming coverage. Separate requirements may apply to massage establishments.
Massachusetts Massage Therapist Licensing Requirements
Massachusetts massage therapists apply for licensure through the Board of Registration of Massage Therapy. For the standard education route, current regulations require completion of a Board-approved course of study that includes at least 650 hours of supervised instruction, along with the state’s other licensing and documentation requirements.
Licensed massage therapists must also complete at least 3 qualified hours of Board-recognized continuing education during the 12 months before their license expires. Current Massachusetts rules specify subject-matter requirements for those hours, so therapists should confirm that the courses they choose satisfy the Board’s current criteria.
MMIP members receive access to 50 free NCBTMB-approved continuing education hours. When selecting courses for Massachusetts license renewal, check that the individual course meets the Board’s current continuing education requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions
MMIP coverage follows the insured practitioner across the United States and across eligible work settings, subject to policy terms, exclusions, and applicable licensing requirements. That can include providing massage services in clients’ homes, workplaces, events, and other locations.
Yes, eligible landlords, spas, employers, event organizations, and other entities may be added as additional insureds when applicable. An additional insured receives certain protection under your policy for qualifying claims involving the additional insured, but it does not give that person or organization a separate insurance policy.
Yes. After purchasing an eligible MMIP policy, you can receive proof of insurance without waiting through a traditional quote process.
Occurrence-form coverage looks at when the qualifying incident happened. An incident that occurs while your policy is active may still be considered if the resulting claim is reported later, subject to the policy’s terms, exclusions, and reporting requirements.
Massachusetts requires licensed massage therapists to maintain individual professional liability insurance with at least $1 million per occurrence and $1 million aggregate coverage.
If you work for a spa, franchise, employer, or another business, review both your own policy and any coverage provided through the workplace rather than assuming the business’s insurance satisfies your individual licensing requirement.
