Do Reiki Practitioners Need Liability Insurance?
Yes. While Reiki is generally considered a safe and non-invasive practice, unexpected incidents can happen in any professional setting. Even when the work itself is gentle, practitioners can still face liability risks that make proper coverage a crucial part of running a professional Reiki practice.
When the Unexpected Happens, MMIP Has Reiki Practitioners Covered
See how trusted liability insurance supports Reiki professionals across the U.S. with coverage designed for real-world energy-healing scenarios—whether sessions are in-person or at a distance.
The Energy Shift Complaint
During a calming Reiki session, your client reports relaxation. Two days later, they experience intense fatigue and headaches, then allege your work caused a setback in their well-being. They’re demanding reimbursement for medical visits and threatening a professional negligence claim.
Your MMIP professional liability coverage activates to provide the means for legal defense and to cover eligible settlements or judgments—up to $2 million per occurrence—so you can continue supporting clients while your case is handled appropriately.
The Consent & Privacy Mix-Up
After a powerful distance Reiki session, you share a glowing client message on Instagram—screenshot, first name, and region—forgetting to obtain written consent. The client’s attorney sends a demand letter alleging invasion of privacy and unauthorized commercial use.
Your policy includes protection for covered personal and advertising injury claims, including allegations tied to privacy. MMIP provides financial protection and the means for legal defense, so you can address the issue and refocus on your practice.
The Circle Trip-and-Fall
You host a Reiki circle and guided meditation. As attendees settle in, one participant catches their foot on a meditation cushion and falls, resulting in a fractured wrist. They’re now facing surgery, therapy, and weeks away from their hand-intensive work.
General liability responds to covered third-party injuries that occur during your events or on your premises. From medical expenses to legal costs and potential settlements, MMIP helps keep one accident from derailing your practice.
What’s Included In A MMIP Reiki Insurance Policy?
1 Additional Insured: $10 | Unlimited Additional Insureds: $30
Some Reiki liability insurance carrier policies offer different limits based on your full-time or part-time status. This would mean that if you are a part-time therapist, you may have less coverage than a full-time one.
We don’t believe in offering different coverage limits, so all our policies have the same limits. Full-time, part-time, or student, all policyholders enjoy the same great coverage. Our liability insurance program prices are based on how you use the coverage and decide to pay.
Professional Liability Insurance: Also known as "malpractice insurance" or "errors and omissions insurance," covers claims related to professional negligence, including instances like burns from hot stones and other injuries caused directly from your professional services.
General Liability Insurance: Provides protection from claims that may not directly stem from your professional services. For example, if a client simply tripped and fell on your property, this coverage would protect you from the financial fallout of the lawsuit.
This coverage can help protect you if you’re accused of libel, slander, or false advertising.
Provides protection against identity theft and threat incidents that would put personal information at risk. Typically includes credit monitoring, dark web scans, and recovery services if your information is jeopardized.

Reiki Insurance Frequently Asked Questions
Reiki insurance is designed to actively protect professionals from the many different forms of risks they’ll face every day in the industry. The three main types of coverage comprising our Reiki insurance plan are general liability, professional liability, and personal injury & advertising coverage.
With MMIP, yes, you can. Some policies fall under claims made policy, but ours use the industry-preferred type, which is occurrence form. Claims-made policies are clear-cut - you have to file a claim while the policy is still active to be considered. If you have a session on the last day of your policy, but a claim comes days later, you won’t be able to file for this claim.
Occurrence form coverage takes a more realistic approach and says you can still file a claim after the policy expires as long as the claim event happened during the active term. This important distinction is the difference between full and no coverage, so always make sure your policy uses the occurrence form.
Absolutely. There are many occasions where an additional insured is needed on a policy so we make it easy to add as many additional insureds as is needed.
For example, being added as an additional insured may be required by landlords who don’t want to be held liable for something arising from the activities of their tenants.
Yes, you are covered for services at both locations. Our policy protects you whether you’re working in your office or at a client’s home. As long as you're following local or state laws, your coverage applies across all 50 states.
MMIP created a program that covers the many variations of Reiki and hundreds of additional massage, health, and wellness services. Acupressure, shiatsu, medical qigong, reflexology, and more are all covered under one all-inclusive policy.
Even though Reiki is a gentle practice focused on channeling life force energy and universal energy, misunderstandings can still lead to legal claims. For example, a client could attribute emotional or physical discomfort to your session. Energy work insurance protects your insured's liability by covering claims related to bodily injury, even in hands-off treatments. The spiritual nature of Reiki doesn’t shield you from legal risk, insurance does.
You can access your certificate of insurance by logging into your online member portal and selecting the "Certificate of Insurance" option. If you need assistance, give us a call and we’ll email it to you.
Filing a claim is easy! Contact our Operations Team at sarasota.bsd.operations@ajg.com to get started. They’ll verify your coverage and ask you to complete a Claim Summary Form. Depending on the situation, they may also request additional documentation. We’ll guide you through the next steps.
Massage spas usually carry some insurance for their employees, but this can be a small amount of coverage, and they’ll commonly have shared annual aggregates. This means that other members in the group can deplete the coverage amount before you get a chance to use it.
To get the peace of mind knowing you’re covered no matter what, and at just $169 per year, having your own Reiki insurance policy is the way to go.
Yes! You can buy a policy now and choose a start date within the next three months. For instance, if you purchase on February 1 but want coverage to begin on March 23, simply choose March 23 as your start date during checkout.
Yes. A quality Reiki insurance policy, like the one from MMIP, includes written publication coverage. That means if such persons believe they were defamed or misrepresented by a blog, article, or even a social media post you’ve authored, your policy will help protect you. This is especially important for Reiki practitioners who educate the public about Japanese Buddhist Mikao Usui and Reiki principles online or in print.
