Liability Insurance for Gua Sha Practitioners
What is Gua Sha?
Gua Sha is a traditional Chinese medicine practice that developed in Eastern Asia. This practice derives from the philosophy that Qi is the energy that flows through the body, and in order for a person to maintain wellness or health, Qi must be free-flowing throughout the entire body. "Gua" translates to scraping and "Sha" translates to sand, which accurately describes the technique. Gua Sha uses a smooth massaging tool made of stone to apply pressure in a scrapping motion to cause theoretically remove Qi blockages within the body. Gua Sha has been suggested to improve circulation, reduce pain and inflammation, boost immune response, and promote healing throughout the body.

Ways You Can Avoid Claims
These are some basic precautions you can take as a Gua Sha provider to reduce the risk of a claim is filed against you:
- Providing Adequate Security: All businesses have a legal obligation to maintain a safe and accessible premises for their patrons. Not doing so is a legal premise called inadequate security. Simple things like installing locks, security lights, and other safeguards helps diminish premises liability for business owners.
- Avoiding Professional Liability claims: Be sure to examine and gather all of your clients' medical backgrounds to avoid clients having adverse reactions or sensitivity to treatments.
- Avoiding General Liability claims: these claims consist of "slip and fall" incidents; for example, if a client slips and falls in your lobby resulting in an injury. It is important to protect yourself from forms of general liability by removing any obstacles from the lobby and ensuring a safe environment for you and your clients.
Please note, this is in no way an exhaustive list and practitioners should consult with an MMIP or legal professional to ensure they have adequate coverage in place in the event of a claim. For whichever modality you practice, having a form of energy work liability coverage is key to protecting your practice when the unthinkable happens. Gua Sha Insurance Frequently Asked Questions
Gua Sha insurance protects you and your practice from the everyday liabilities in your practice. Massage Magazine Insurance Plus's policies encompass three main types of coverage in our Gua Sha insurance plan are general liability, professional liability, and product liability coverage.
- General liability - covers policyholders from third party claims relating to an injury and/or property damage. This type of coverage is deliberately broad (hence, “general”) to cover the many different types of accidents that can happen. A new client tripping over your front door mat can be all it takes to suddenly be facing a general liability claim against you.
- Professional liability - covers the policyholder from claims related to malpractice, or the actual services they were performing when the injury and/or property damage occurs.
- Product liability - covers the policyholder from claims relating to a client having an adverse reaction experienced because of a product used during the session.
Massage Magazine Insurance Plus is one of the very insurance partners that offers our members unlimited NCBTMB-approved continuing education courses. We want you to grow your practice which is why we offer courses that are designed to be both informative and engaging so you retain more of what’s being taught. Our CE courses for Gua Sha practitioners help you stay current and can help count towards the continuing education requirements set by your state board.
Some states don’t require a license in order to practice Gua Sha but every jurisdiction is different so make sure you’re up to date on your state board’s requirements. With that said, we can’t insure something that isn’t legal for you to do, so if a license is required by your state, you'd need that in order to secure reiki insurance coverage.
With MMIP, yes you can. Some policies fall under a claims made policy but ours use the industry-preferred type which is occurrence form. Claims made policies will only allow you to file a claim while the policy is still active. Occurrence form coverage takes a more realistic, industry prefered approach and says you can still file a claim after the policy expires as long as the claim event happened during the active term.
Absolutely. There are many occasions where an additional insured is needed on a policy so we make it easy to add as many additional insureds as is needed. As an example, being added as an additional insured may be required by landlords that don’t want to be held liable for something arising from the activities of their tenants.
Slip and fall accidents are common liability claims for any business that opens it's doors to customers. MMIP includes general liability coverage, which is also called “slip and fall insurance” since this type of injury and ensuing claim event is a common category. With MMIP’s energy work insurance, you’d have all the way up to $2 million to cover both the costs of the general liability claim and any legal defense fees, if they’re necessary.
Some insurance providers require minimum hour qualifications, however, MMIP is an insurance partner and has no minimum hour qualification. We want our Gua Sha practitioners to have access to protection for their practice no matter what stage of their career they're in.
Gua Sha practitioners have access to a full coverage, affordable liability policy in addition to unbeatable member benefits for the flat rate of $169. If you’re a student, you can take advantage of our discounted reiki student insurance policy for only $25 for an entire year of coverage.
This is our most frequently asked question, when starting your practice it's a common thought to consider foregoing the cost of liability insurance, however, neglecting to purchase coverage could have devastating and costly effects. MMIP offers affordable, industry preferred liability insurance for the flat rate of $169 per year which is around $14 per month. Included in each policy members receive millions of dollars worth of insurance coverage types, additional protection mechanisms built-in, and a whole suite of awesome member benefits that are available to use immediately.
MMIP supports over 450+ modalities like Gus Sha, while some providers only cover a limited number of service, Massage Magazine Insurance Plus covers hundreds of additional massage, health, and wellness services, as well. Facial massage, lymphatic drainage, Reiki, reflexology, and more are all covered under one all-encompassing policy.
While Massage spas sometimes carry liability coverage for their employees, this coverage can have small limitations and shared annual aggregates. This means that the coverage amount can be depleted by other members in the group before you get a chance to use it. For only less than $0.47 per day, you can have peace of mind knowing you're protected.
Gua Sha helps to unblock Chi from flowing through the body, this requires a process using a Gua tool in a scraping motion which can oftentimes cause bruising and tenderness, which can pose as a liability. Unfortunately, liabilities are everywhere for wellness professionals from a slip and fall incident to an allergic reaction to a massage product. When faced with a claim, the results can be devastating to your reputation and practice, that's it's important to have an insurance partner like MMIP, to help you through every step of the way.
