What is the practice of Sports Massage Therapy?
Sports massage therapy is meant for athletes at all levels. Different techniques can be geared towards the rigors of the particular sport or training regimen being undertaken by the athlete. For example, a soccer player may require particular attention to their legs as this is the area of the body most used and stressed. A CrossFitⓇ athlete may need more focus on their shoulders from the many repetitive and aggressive overhead movements required. Sports massage therapy is becoming more and more popular with athletes attempting to find more balance within their training regimen. It helps the body be better prepared and recover faster. Typical techniques include:
- Deep tissue massage: using a firm amount of pressure, combined with a really slow stroke speed, in order to hit the deepest layers of muscles and their connective tissues.
- Swedish massage: focus on light, long, and/or kneading strokes combined with light tapping for the benefit of the top layers of muscles.
- Compression massage: applies pressure with the hands to muscles, is held, and then released before moving to a different area and repeating. Helps to promote relaxation, circulation, and faster recovery.
- Cross-Fiber massage: involves using the thumb to move across the grain of muscles and ligaments. This helps in the rehabilitation of a fibrous tissue injuries by encouraging strong and pliable scar tissue. It can also help restore mobility from previous issues.
- Trigger Point/Tender Point massage: trigger points are areas of muscle tightness or soreness that have corresponding effects in other areas of the body. Compression is used on the specific area, with active participation from the client, to help alleviate the pain.
- Lymphatic massage: gentle form of massage using light strokes to help circulate fluids through the lymphatic system. This form of massage is said to help reduce inflammation, remove toxins, and help boost recovery.
Proponents of sport massage therapy, received either before or after an activity, describe greater flexibility, a reduction in fatigue, reduced soreness, greater endurance, the benefit of preventing injuries, and overall relaxation. All of these help prepare an athlete’s body and their mind to perform at their best for a given activity and to be able to regularly repeat the activity. These benefits are derived by specifically targeting the junctions between muscles and tendons. For additional information on sports therapy massage, the Sports Massage Association (SMA) is a professional organization that offers a multitude of information for professionals in the field.
With so many athletes and physical activity participants realizing the enhancement to their training regimen that sports massage therapy brings, the demand for sports massage therapists is incredibly high. For all therapists, it’s important to protect both yourself and your career with a robust sports massage therapist insurance policy for when an unfortunate event occurs.
Our Sports Massage Therapy Insurance Plans Provide Coverage Under the Following Areas:
General Liability Insurance: This is also known as “slip and fall” insurance because that’s a common type of accident that can cause a claim. When you open your doors and start receiving clients, you’re also opening yourself up to general liability. Coverage here applies to injuries or property damage to third-party individuals in and around your place of business. A client tripping over a loose front door mat and injuring themselves is an example of an event that would fall under this coverage type.
Professional Liability Insurance: Also called “malpractice coverage” this protection is for the actual services you provide during a session. If a client reports an injury or somehow has their property damaged during treatment, they may seek legal action to get compensation. These types of claims would fall under professional liability.
Product Liability Insurance: To provide a great session for your clients, you’ll likely use a number of different instruments and tools. When equipment malfunctions, or a client has a bad reaction to something in one of the products you used, they may require medical attention. Afterwards, the client may demand you pay for all their costs since it was your product that caused their injury. Claims like this would fall under product liability coverage.
Identity Protection Plan: Today’s sports massage therapists are exposed more than ever to the threat of a cyber incident stealing their personal data. If this occurs, our members get all the way up to $25,000 in identity restoration services.
Personal Injury & Advertising Coverage: This coverage can provide financial assistance to massage therapists if they become legally obligated to pay damages that arise from claims related to false advertising, libel or slander or copyright infringement. For example, if a MT's marketing materials inadvertently included false statements that damage another person's reputation, this coverage can help with legal and financial fallouts.
Full Suite Protection: It’s the full suite of protections offered in our plans that provides the best level of security possible from all the types of risks facing today’s sports massage therapists. We’ve designed our plans to be an effective safeguard so that our members can focus on providing great treatments to clients, rather than what their insurance covers.
Occurrence Form Coverage Explained
Many insurance companies use what’s known as a claims-made policy while we ascribe to an occurrence form policy. So what’s the big deal? With a claims-made policy, any claim that’s filed after a policy has expired will not be covered unless the policyholder specifically purchased an additional period of coverage known as a “tail”. We wanted to avoid any angst with our members post-policy so elected to use an occurrence form policy which simply means that if a claim is filed for an event that occurred while the policy was still active, it’s covered, no matter if the policy has long expired.
Additional Membership Benefits
Our members deserve so much more than just robust coverage options in order to enjoy a good value for the investment they’ve made by obtaining sports massage insurance. That’s why we’ve included more than $1800 in exclusive member benefits with our policy.

Why is Insurance Important for Sports Massage Therapists?
Accidents Can Happen!
Sports massage requires intense sessions of hands-on therapy to get deep into muscle tissue and ligaments to promote increased oxygen flow, circulation, and healing. Sometimes these sessions are short when a client is suffering from an injury and your therapy is helping them begin their road to recovery. But even within a few minutes, the incredibly mundane can turn financially devastating.
Events happen every day to therapists that put them and their career at risk. A simple slip and fall or a client asserting that your treatment left them injured could easily result in action being taken against you. Even when the claim is completely without merit, legal defense can be incredibly costly. Without sports massage insurance, a therapist could be left covering these costs out-of-pocket.

Hear What Our Massage Insurance Members Have To Say
Companies can tout all the benefits of their offerings all day long but one of the best indications that the service is what you’re expecting is to read customer reviews. However, in a world where fake reviews are running rampant, we’ve opted to utilize TrustPilot - an independent, third-party customer review platform. TrustPilot garners verified customer reviews in an unbiased environment so that you can see exactly what real members say about our services. On TrustPIlot, we’re proud to be rated as “Excellent”, with 4.7 out of 5 stars, and more than 700 reviews from happy professionals that have purchased their policy through us.

Although I have never had to make a claim, I have been insured by Insurance Plus since around 1998. I find it meets my commercial needs, extremely affordable compared to other standard insurers available with coverage that gives me a sense of confidence that I am protected. I will continue to be a faithful client.
