American Massage Council (AMC) & AMC Insurance
The American Massage Council (AMC) works to supply professionals in the field of massage therapy with malpractice insurance. AMC is based in Santa Ana, California. Originally, the group was formed to provide insurance to chiropractic doctors and massage therapists. However, in order to offer more focused services to massage therapists, the AMC program split in 2000. As of 2010, the organization had more than 21,000 members.
According the group's website, the AMC staff has more than 50 years of combined experience in malpractice protection--from massage therapy defense and practice management to massage ethics and risk management. The organization's mission is to provide malpractice coverage to its members. Its professional liability limits are $1 million per claim and $3 million per year.
According to a 2010 report, AMC makes insurance available for premises liability, along with hot stone and lava stone massage, hydrotherapy, taping and company. It offers coverage to practitioners of reiki, Rolfing, and craniosacral therapy. Still, the main thrust of the program remains malpractice insurance for LMTs.
AMC also offers a massage school insurance program, which is designed to protect the school, faculty and students against a malpractice claim. The council reports that this coverage protects all potential defendants in a school malpractice cause of action under one policy.
AMC's massage school program is offered at $495 per year (for smaller schools) and $995 per year (for larger schools); and it includes professional, premises and product liability coverage.
